As a place to meet and to start your tour of the Old Town, enclosed by the historic city wall, we recommend the Inneres Frauentor (Inner Frauentor). On your tour you may choose to see any of the following: the historic battlement parapet, the Marienkirche (St. Mary's Church) with its memorial to Thomas Müntzer, the Peasants' War Museum, Kornmarktkirche, the city museum, the Allerheiligenkriche (All Saints Church) museum gallery, the city hall with its imperial-city archives (Reichsstädtisches Archiv), the Divi Blasii Church - the place where Johann Sebastian Bach worked - and the synagogue. We invite you to make your personal choice. Our staff will be delighted to advise you. In order to meet your special interests, theme tours such as "Mühlhausen as an imperial free-city", "The Reformation period in Mühlhausen", "Mühlhausen and its mills" can be arranged.

"In the footsteps of Johann Sebastian Bach through Mühlhausen" - His music connects music lovers in USA and Germany.
Following his organ recital in Mühlhausen on 24 April 1707, Johann Sebastian Bach was appointed organist at St. Blasius’ on 15 June 1707. In Mühlhausen he composed well-known cantatas such as: "I call you from the depth, My Lord; BWV 131” and "God is my King; BWV 71”. These are typical compositions for his time in Mühlhausen often referred to as the period of his "early masterpieces". On 25 June, 1708 Bach wrote a petition to be relieved of his duties for a number of reasons. However, he remained a friend of the town all his life. During the time in Mühlhausen, he also wrote a description for an organ disposal. In 1959 the organ builder Schuke revived Bach's ideas and built a new organ for Mühlhausen. Today is the organ used for concerts and organ plays.

"Johann August Roebling- the bridge builder of the Brooklyn Bridge”
He was born in Mühlhausen/Thuringia on June 12 1816, the fifth child of the tobacco merchant Christoph Polykarp Roebling. In Mühlhausen Roebling attended primary school, followed by grammar school. He passed his examination as architect at a mere fourteen years of age. In 1824 Johann August Roebling enrolled at the Royal Polytechnic Institute in Berlin, where he studied architecture, civil engineering, bridge building, embankment construction, hydraulics and mechanical engineering. On May 11, 1831 Roebling left Mühlhausen for ever along with other emigrants. Roebling and his "emigrant brother” Karl Friedrich founded the colony Germania, soon renamed Saxonburg, in the State of Pennsylvania. On September 30, 1837 Johann August Roebling took American citizenship. Roebling successfully introduced the use of wire ropes, which he manufactured in Saxonburg from 1841 on. In 1848 he founded the Roebling works in Trenton. In 1867 the New York State Parliament passed a law allowing the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge. In the very same year John A. Roebling was engaged as Chief Engineer of the project. The supervision of the bridge construction was taken over by the eldest son, Washington A. Roebling. In 1833 the Brooklyn Bridge was officially opened.

"The reformation with Thomas Müntzer"
- His work was the basic for the Evangelic Lutheran Church in USA and Germany.
Thomas Müntzer was in addition to Martin Luther one of the famoused persons, who was responsible for the success of the reformation in germany.
At the beginning they was friends. But booth going separate ways, because Müntzer wasen`t the reforms of Luther extensive enough.
Thomas Müntzer studied in Leipzig and Frankfurt/Oder and had been engaged in pastoral activity in several places. In 1524 he came from Allstedt to Mühlhausen, but in September the political situation changed and Müntzer was expelled from the imperial free city. In February 1525 he was back in Mühlhausen and at St. Mary's Church he preached for the return to "The Law of God". Müntzer became the spiritual leader of the radical reformist wing in the Peasants' War. After the military defeat of the rebelling peasants near Frankenhausen he was captured, tortured and finally executed outside Mühlhausen.

"Discover a medieval town- back to historic roots"
Mühlhausen is known as the city of gates and churches. Because of the 56 steeples and towers of its city wall the place was originally referred to as " Mulhusia turrita", which means "Mühlhausen ornamented with steeples and towers".
In mediaeval times Mühlhausen ranked second after Erfurt as the most important city in Thuringia. Its architectural diversity provides evidence of the economic and cultural importance the former imperial free-city (Reichsstadt) once had, as does the city itself with its well-preserved, fully accessible city wall.
During the Peasant´s War Mühlhausen was a gathering point of the rebellion. Thomas Müntzer, reformer and their leader, used to preach there in the Marienkirche (St. Mary's Church) with its five naves. Furthermore Mühhausen is known as a centre of protestant church music. The hall church of Divii Blasii with was one of the places where Johann Sebastian Bach worked. In recent years the old town has been redeveloped and regained much of its historic splendour.
